How to identify it

This is a later print, number 3 in the run, not the first. The first print is First print — 0901 box, no Game of the Year star.

The first Game of the Year box, and the only one with foil.

  • Back reads 0302 Part No. X08-76726 — March 2002.
  • Gold Game of the Year! star on the front, review quotes on the back.
  • Yellow "Only on Xbox" across the top of the front.
  • Holographic foil on the front and back covers. PriceCharting records the foil sheen as unique to this cover among the Game of the Year variants, so it is the quickest way to tell this print from the later Game of the Year boxes.
  • Retouched artwork: finger on the assault rifle, leftmost Banshee moved right to clear the star.

Inside: the 1201 booklet, the Brutus insert 1001 Part No. X08-56362, and still the left-Warthog disc 0901 Part No. X08-54601.

Notes

The star arrives about four months after launch, which is what makes the plain cover such a short window.

The foil is the useful part of this row. Later Game of the Year boxes drop it, so "gold star plus foil" places a copy in 2002 and "gold star, no foil" places it in or after 2003.
