About

Halo reached North America on 15 November 2001, the day the Xbox did. It then won 2002 Game of the Year from IGN, EGM, OXM and the AIAS, and Microsoft put the star on the box — which is the luckiest thing that can happen to a first print. The launch cover is the one with nothing on it.

Better still, Microsoft dated its boxes. The part number low on the back opens with four digits giving the month and year the box was printed, so this game's prints line up in order: 0901 → 0302 → 0403 → 0903 → 0204 → 0804 → 0105 → 0507. The launch box reads 0901 — September 2001, two months before release.

Nine retail printings are recorded here, and the cover changes three times along the way: the gold star arrives, the foil and the yellow "Only on Xbox" line arrive with it and then leave, and the Warthog on the disc label moves from left to right. The disc revisions do not match the printed disc numbers, so a loose disc cannot be placed.
